Kiley Coyne, Director of Bands

Kiley Coyne has been the Director of Bands at Washington High School since 2017. Previously, she was the Director of Bands and Elementary General Music/Instrumental teacher (K-12) in the Parker School District.
At Washington, Mrs. Coyne is responsible for the education and performance preparation of the Warrior Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Varsity Band, Pep Band, Jazz II, and the woodwind chamber ensemble. Mrs. Coyne is also highly involved in the Concert Band, Freshman Band, and Jazz groups I and III. She holds a Masters of Music degree in Instrumental Conducting from the University of South Dakota and also earned her Bachelors of Fine Arts Degree from the University of South Dakota with a major in music education. Her principal mentors included Dr. Jonathan Alvis, Dr. Holdhusen, and Dr. Rolf Olson.
During her time at the University of South Dakota, she earned a graduate teaching assistantship where she conducted the USD Symphonic Band and Concert Band, served as Drum Major and Graduate Assistant Director for The SOUND of USD Marching Band, conducted at the South Dakota Bandmaster's Association at South Dakota State University in 2015, and entertained the Director and Choreographer position for The Color of USD..
Mrs. Coyne grew up in Sioux Falls and is active in the Sioux Falls community by participating in the local vocal group entitled "Transept," the Sioux Falls Municipal Band playing clarinet, and the Sioux Falls Cathedral Vespers' "Schola Contorum." In addition, she spends her summers directing and writing color guard choreography for several high schools in the area.
Mrs. Coyne is a member of the South Dakota Bandmaster's Association, National Association for Music Education, and the South Dakota Music Educator's Association. She loves coffee, going to Crossfit classes, doing yoga in her home, and walking her four poodles/doodles, Eloise, Amelia, Nikita, and Charlie. She lives in central Sioux Falls with her husband, Sean and her son, Oliver.

Benjamin Harder, Assistant Director of Bands

Ben has been involved in music nearly his whole life. Originally from Hesston, Kansas, Ben began studying trombone and playing in band in middle school. His passion for music and desire to educate lead him to Bethel College, where he completed degrees in trombone performance and music education. Following his student teaching, Ben won a graduate assistantship at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida, where he earned a Masters in Jazz Studies Trombone Performance.
During his career, Ben has had the pleasure of studying and performing with fantastic mentors, teachers, and musicians including: Jim Pisano, Timothy Shade, Paul McKee, Leon Anderson, Bill Peterson, Jose Carrasco, Bob Mintzer, Victor Goines, and many others. He has had the pleasure of teaching students in Kansas, Michigan, Florida, Wisconsin, and now South Dakota.
Ben loves jazz and is passionate about sharing music with students and audiences wherever he goes. In addition to teaching, Ben loves the Kansas City Royals, cooking, long distance running, and disc golf. He lives in central Sioux Falls with his wife Susan, son and daughter, Roy and Evelyn respectively, and their two cats.
